Dubach crowned youth state champ

MADISON - The WWF Kids Folkstyle State Championships were held March 23-24 at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum (Alliant Energy Center) in Madison. The Monroe Mat Rats had three wrestlers compete - Joah Wellman, Chelsey Gilbert and Jack Dubach.

Dubach was crowned a state champ in the 2005-06 91-pound division. Dubach went into the championship match undefeated on the day. In Round 1, Dubach beat Owen Krueger from Wrightstown by a 4-0 decision. In the quarterfinal, he defeated Brecken Muench by major decision, 9-0. In the semifinal, Dubach won by decision, 6-4, over Omro's Bryce Crowley. In the championship, Dubach edged Robert Flege from LAW by a 3-2 decision.

Wellman (2009-10, 85 pounds) was making his first appearance at state and wrestled well but did not place. On the girl's side, Chelsey Gilbert (2006-08, 150-plus pounds) placed first but did not have any opponents in her division.

Four Monroe Mat Rats wrestled at the 2018 USAW Folkstyle Youth Wrestling Nationals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, March 28-31. Dubach placed fifth in the Schoolboy 90-pound division, winning the final match 7-0. Mat Rats who also wrestled but did not place were Carson Menehan (Novice, 82 pounds); Garret Voegeli (Cadet, 88 pounds); Patrick Rielly (Junior, 160 pounds).

The end-of-season wrestling banquet for the Monroe Mat Rats will be held Saturday in the Monroe High School M-Room.
