Donald Peter “Pete” Ranum, 71, widower of Mary Elizabeth Ranum, died Monday, December 7, 2020, at Prisma Health Tuomey in Sumter, SC.
Pete was born in Dodgeville, WI on December 24, 1948 and graduated from high school at Warren, IL. He was the 11th child of the late Lula Lavera and Vivian Charles Ranum. He was a Vietnam War veteran retiring from the U.S. Air Force as a Senior Master Sargent (SMGT) after 20 years of service. He later worked with the South Carolina Department of Corrections for 20 years retiring with the rank of Captain. Pete also volunteered through the Red Cross at the Base Hospital Pharmacy on Shaw AFB.
He dearly loved his family. He enjoyed reading, working in the yard, watching movies, and traveling to visit friends and family.
Pete is survived by his son, Brian Joseph Ranum (Haffah Maria Rachel) of Vancouver, WA; stepdaughter, Fatima Carmen Azh; godchild, Taylor. He is further survived by sisters, Ruth Flanagan (John), Sandy Martin, Sharon Rousch (Wally), Sherry Rosensteil (Marv) and Mary Brenum (Boone); brothers, Tom (Inge), Larry (Sandy), Bill (Pat), and Paul (Lynne); two 99-year-old aunts, Thelma Currence and Helen “Toots” Sietz; special neighbor and friend, Susan; and many nieces and nephews.
Pete was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years in December 2014; a brother, Johnny and sisters, Jean and Ula.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 12 Noon Monday, December 14, 2020, in the Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, SC.
