Monroe Arts Center seeking photos for 26th annual contest

MONROE - Now in its 26th year, the Monroe Arts Center's annual Photography Contest is seeking the best photographs for inclusion in the event. Photographs entered in this contest will be on exhibit in MAC's Wesley Hall from Sept. 4 through Oct. 23. An opening reception and awards presentation for the exhibit is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 4.

The entry fee for the contest is $20 per photographer and the entry deadline is Aug. 14.

The contest is for non-professional photographers and participants are not required to be Wisconsin residents.

There are two classifications, adult and junior (under 18 years of age), and four categories, person, place, thing, and celebration. Participants may enter no more than two categories and a total of two photographs. Photographs must have been taken after Jan. 1, 2014.

First-, second-, and third-place ribbons will be given in each category and classification based on merit and number of entrants. Cash awards for the adult classification are $125 for best of show, $75 for first runner-up and $50 for second runner-up, and cash awards for the junior classification are $50 for best of show, $30 for first runner-up and $20 for second runner-up.

The photography exhibit titled "The Pinhole Thing" by Madison photographer Cameron Gillie will also be on display Sept. 4 through Oct. 23 in MAC Frehner Gallery. Gillie earned a photography degree from the Colorado Institute of Art and was employed as a photojournalist with the Greeley Tribune (Colorado) and Naples Daily News (Florida). Gillie will serve as the judge for the contest.
