MONROE - Monroe Arts Center presents "An Evening with S. Carey" at 7:30 p.m. March 19, at the Monroe High School Performing Arts Center at 1600 26th St.

The chosen musical expression of Sean Carey, who records as S. Carey, is a serene, restorative panorama of beauty- perfect given how landscape and the wonder of nature inspire much of his imagery. His music is simultaneously restful and rhythmic, complex and simple, and always evolving.

Carey, who studied classical percussion and piano and is a 2007 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, is best known as the drummer, pianist and supporting vocalist with the Grammy award-winning indie band Bon Iver. It was Carey's love for jazz drumming that prepared him for a central role in this great Wisconsin musical collaboration and successful career.

Immediately after graduating in 2007, Carey learned that fellow Eau Claire resident Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) was forming a band to take his "For Emma, Forever Ago" composition on the road. Carey rehearsed drum and vocal parts for the album with Vernon and he has been a mainstay of Bon Iver ever since.

Carey's solo career came about semi-accidentally. While on tour with Bon Iver, Carey developed his own song-writing ambitions. After each month-long stint of touring, Carey returned home to Eau Claire and recorded songs and experimented with layering sounds together.

"I didn't start out thinking I was going to write an album," Carey said. "I had a couple song ideas, and it just went from there. I recorded a few songs, and as time went on I got further into those songs and recorded more layers, then I had friends come over and record stuff I couldn't play, and by that time I had come up with more songs until finally I just had this full-length thing."

In 2010, those recordings were released on his debut album "All We Grow." The song "In the Dirt" from that album appeared in the last scene of the episode "The Dig" from the seventh season of the TV series "House M.D." and also in the last scene of the episode "What Went Wrong" from the third season of the TV series "The Good Wife."

Carey recently composed some original music for the new Netflix show "Flaked," starring Will Arnett, and he is currently on tour in Asia with Bon Iver.

Joining Carey (keyboard, percussion, vocals) on stage for the Monroe concert are his own band members Jeremy Boettcher (bass), Zach Hanson (drums, kalimba), Ben Lester (pedal steel, percussion) and Nick Ball (guitar).
