MCCONNELL, Ill. - Robert D. Bessert, 73, of McConnell, IL passed away February 3rd, 2014 at his home. Robert was born on September 9, 1940 to Waldemar and Alice (Rockow) Bessert in McConnell, IL. He married Sharon Keppen and together they had eight children. Robert enjoyed working with wood. He owned and operated Bessert construction for 43 years. Robert was an active fireman for the McConnell Fire Department for more than 30 years, after retiring from active duty he became an honorary fireman. He was a co-chairman of the 1st Stephenson County Arson Investigation Task Force, a charter member of McConnell area historical museum, a past trustee for the Grace Free Methodist Church of McConnell for 25 years. For the last 10 years, Robert worked in maintenance for Wal-Mart in Freeport, IL.

He is survived by his children Duane Bessert of Freeport, IL, Greg (Cindy) Bessert of Cedarville, IL, Doug (Sandy) Bessert of Lena, IL, Susan (Tim) Hetzel of Appleton, WI, Nancy Klentz of Lena, IL, Todd (Julie) Bessert of McConnell, IL, James (Kristi) Bessert of Monroe, WI; 11 grandchildren; and special friends Sue and Don Rudisill.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, brother Gerald Bessert, and son Lee Bessert in 2008.

A service will be held at Leamon Funeral Home in Lena, IL on Friday February, 7th 2014 at 2:00 p.m.

A visitation will be held at Leamon Funeral Home in Lena, IL on Thursday February, 6th 2014 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.

A memorial has been established for the McConnell Fire Department.
