Margaret A. Marti age 87, formerly of Monroe, died Saturday, May 5, 2012 at the Golden Living Center-Continental Manor in Abbotsford, WI. Margaret was born July 15, 1924 in Monroe, WI, the daughter of Karl and Anna (Bruggmann) Niedermann.
The focus of Margaret's life was her family and her career. She took the greatest pride in children and grandchildren: their lives, careers and especially their happiness. Whenever she spoke with her children, she always wanted to know what her grandchildren were doing and delighted in hearing the updates of their lives. Throughout her life, Margaret would always comment that she wanted her children and grandchildren to be happy and that above all, that was the most important thing she wished for them.
Margaret was a Registered Nurse and took great pride in her nursing career, which started in 1946, spanned over 50 years and included staff and leadership positions including being a Director of Nursing at the Green County/Pleasant View Nursing Home in Monroe, WI. Being that Margaret was an early career woman with a college degree, she also believed strongly in the value of higher education and encouraged her children and grandchildren in their chosen pursuits in this regard.
Margaret had several significant hobbies and interests throughout her life. Music was a part of Margaret's entire life and an interest that she encouraged in all of her children who all played piano and also were in the Monroe High School Band. Margaret enjoyed playing piano and had one in her home, her entire life. Early in her youth and young adult life she also was an accomplished organist. In her youth she played the organ for Mass at St. Victor's Church (Monroe, WI), for the chapel when she was in Nurses training at Marion College in Fond du Lac, WI and early in her nursing career in the chapel at St. Clare's Hospital (Monroe, WI). She also played oboe for the Blanchardville, WI, High School Band. Margaret firmly believed that having music in your life gave you an appreciation of what is important beyond our mundane, day-to-day work and concerns. Margaret was a lifelong gardener, truly loved her perennial flower beds and shrubs and had elaborate plantings in the last home in Monroe, WI. Whenever her family visited, she took pride in having all take a walk outside and see her tiered gardens. Margaret's 'green thumb' extended to inside her home where throughout her life were many, robust houseplants including an abundance of African violets, which grew and blossomed, seemingly without much effort on her part. From her childhood to late into her life, Margaret loved her pets: from her beloved dog, Teddy, who she would take walks with in the woods on her parent's family farm as a teenager and nursing student, to later in her life, her standard Schnauzer, Gretchen (who was quite a character) and especially her also beloved cats (Mike, Betty & George, most recently). Margaret always delighted in having her well-fed, dogs and cats in her life until she could no longer ably take care of them and then always delighted in inquiring about her children's pets.
Margaret lived a full and hard-working life. Her beliefs, values and work ethic are an inspiration to her entire family who now say good-bye to their matriarch as her soul joins our Lord, Jesus Christ and the communion of saints who look over us all.
She is survived by her five children, Anna Marie (Michael) Griffin of Sussex, WI and grandsons, Jonathan, Daniel, and Thomas Schulenberg, Carol Rose (Jeffrey)) Otteson of Tucson, AZ and grandson, Gabriel Otteson, Martha Jean (Frank) Steffel of Delafield, WI, and granddaughters, Elene (Luke) Paulus, Angelica Demopoulos, Alexandra Demopoulos & great-grandson, Peter Paulus, Malcolm Charles "Max" (Cindy) Marti of Wauwatosa, WI and grandsons, Matthew, Elliott, and Isaac Marti, Steven Anthony (Kirsten) Hubler-Marti of Marshfield, WI and granddaughters, Kailey and Ella Hubler-Marti and grandsons, Elijah and Benjamin Hubler-Marti; a brother, Robert Paul (Mary) Niedermann of Delafield, WI; and a sister-in-law, Rosemarie Niedermann of Belvidere, IL.
