Magdelena "Lena" Victoria Lingg, age 93, formerly of Monroe, died Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at Liberty Village Nursing Home, Freeport.

Lena was born on April 22, 1917 in Argyle, Wisconsin, the daughter of John and Victoria (Lang) Birk. She attended rural schools near Argyle, Wisconsin and later worked as a nanny in Chicago.

She married Oscar Lingg on January 18, 1940 at St. Victor Catholic Church in Monroe. She and Oscar were partners in operating cheese factories at the Dill Cheese Factory in Browntown, and the Excelsior Cheese Factory in Lena, IL. They moved to Monroe after retiring in 1964.

During her retirement, Lena was an active member at St. Victor Catholic Church, Monroe Senior Center, Monroe Garden Club and Swiss Club. She also loved doing needlework projects for her family, China painting, and working in her garden. She and Oscar enjoyed traveling in their retirement and spending time with family and friends. Her greatest passion and highlight of her life was sharing time with her family.

She will be remembered by her family for her optimism, passion for life and a loving heart, always ready to give of herself. In later years as she faced health problems she turned her challenges into inspirational moments for her family and friends.

She was a devoted mother to her two daughters, JoAnn (Carl) Endorf of Barrington, IL and Jean (Bill) Engel of Freeport, IL. Survivors include five grandchildren, Mari Jo Lena (Jerry) Reep, Deborah (Tim) Hunt, both of Florida, Carl Jr. (Stashi) Endorf of Nevada, Heidi (Chris) Albertson of Indiana, and Michael (Hannah) Engel of Wisconsin; twelve great-grandchildren, Brittany, Justin, Brandon, Steven, Corynne, McKenzie, Christopher, Christina, Carl III, Hannah, Eric, and Oscar.

She was preceded in death by her husband Oscar; an infant daughter, Mary Magdelena; three brothers, Peter (Charlotte), Joseph (Clara), and Victor (Marian) Birk; and her sister, Delia (Robert) Erickson. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 7, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Victor Catholic Church with Father Michael Klarer officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Monroe. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. A memorial fund will be established in Lena's name. The Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, is assisting the family.
