John Auestad, age 90, of Argyle, WI, passed away Monday, December 30, 2013, at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg, WI. He was born May 3, 1923 in Sandness, Norway, the son of Martin and Jana (Lea) Auestad. John grew up in the Primrose area near Mount Horeb, WI, until age 10, when his family moved to Adams Township in Green County, WI, in the Puddledock area. John continued to farm on the family farm until retiring into the Village of Argyle in 1984. He was united in marriage to Marion Freitag on July 28, 1956 at St. John's United Church of Christ in Monroe, WI. John was known for having an exceptional Registered Holstein herd and for improving his farm through soil conservation efforts, which he had developed over many years.
John is survived by a daughter: Mary (John, D.V.M.) Arnold of Blue Mounds, WI; one granddaughter: Liz Arnold; one sister: JoAnn (Arleigh) Hendrickson of Rockford, IL; one brother-in-law: Myron Hendrickson of Monroe, WI; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Marion on July 22, 1996; two brothers: Swen Auestad and one in infancy; and five sisters: Malena Hanna, Karen Larson, Sigrid Makos, June Hendrickson, and one in infancy.
John was a member of Adams Lutheran Church and a charter member of Yellowstone Golf Course, where he shot a hole-in-one. He served on a number of boards some of which included Adams Township Clerk, Federal Land Bank, and Green County Holstein Association. John was also active in the Argyle Lions Club and served on the village council. John was an avid Wisconsin sports fan, who looked forward to watching the Packers, Badgers, Brewers, and Bucks.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 3, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at Adams Lutheran Church, N7148 County Road A in rural Argyle with Rev. Rick Fry officiating. Burial will be in Adams Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Argyle. A visitation will be held Thursday, January 2, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Erickson Funeral Home, 801 East Milwaukee Street in Argyle.
