MONROE - A car rolled and landed on its side after the driver tried to pass a tractor midday Tuesday at a three-way intersection northwest of Monroe.

The two-vehicle accident with minor injuries was reported at 12:05 p.m. in the W7400 block of Wisconsin 81 in the town of Jordan, according to Green County Deputy Sheriff John Schuetz.

Mason R. Howard, 23, rural Browntown, was driving a tractor eastbound on Wis. 81 and was in the process of turning left onto Skinner Hollow Road when an eastbound car behind him tried to pass the tractor.

The tractor and the 2018 Toyota collided side-by-side. The impact caused the Toyota to roll into a nearby ditch, landing on its driver side.

The driver of the Toyota, Justin G. Wellik, 54, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, did not need to be extracted and sustained only minor injuries, according to Schuetz. The Browntown and Monroe fire departments and Browntown EMS assisted deputies at the scene.

Wellik was cited for unsafe passing at an intersection.

Even though this section of Wis. 81 is a passing zone for eastbound traffic, it is against state law to overtake and pass another vehicle "within 100 feet of or traversing any intersection" on a two-lane road.
