Midterm elections coming up; vote is Tuesday
Elections

The fall general election is Tuesday, with polls open statewide from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Statewide races

Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, who withdrew from the race only to reenter one week later after Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez withdrew from the race over campaign finance irregularities, faces U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany (R–Hazelhurst) in the race to replace Democratic Gov. Tony Evers.

Running with Crowley and Tiffany, respectively, are lieutenant governor candidates Sarah Godlewski, the current secretary of state, and David Varnam, the former Lancaster mayor.

The attorney general race is a rematch of the 2022 race between Democratic incumbent Josh Kaul and Republican Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney.

The secretary of state race to replace Godlewski features Democratic Milwaukee Ald. JoCasta Zammaripa, Republican Jay Schroeder of Neenah, and Green Party candidate Pete Karas of Muskego.

The state treasurer race features Democratic Marathon County Sup. Yee Leng Xiong of Weston against Republican incumbent John Leiber.

Legislative races

This year is the first time odd-numbered state Senate districts have had elections since redistricting in early 2024. The redistricting did not change Congressional seats.

The new 17th Senate District, which formerly extended north from Grant County, now extends east to south of Madison. State Rep. Jenna Jacobson (D–Oregon) defeated Corrine Hendrickson of Blanchardville and Lisa White of Potosi in the August primary to face Sen. Howard Marklein (R–Spring Green) in November.

Bill Oemichen of the Town of New Glarus defeated Josh Mitness of Monroe and Bryna Caves of Albany to win the 50th Assembly District Democratic nomination. Oemichen faces Republican Jon Aleckson, Town of Springdale outside of Mount Horeb, to replace Jacobson.

State Rep. Travis Tranel (R–Town of Hazel Green) is opposed in the 49th Assembly District by John Rindy of Potosi.

Rep. Todd Novak (R–Dodgeville) is opposed in the 51st Assembly District by Democrat Ben Gruber of Arena.

Rep. Tony Kurtz (R–Wonewoc), who represented the old 50th Assembly District, is running in the new 41st Assembly District against Democrat Zach Commons of Reedsburg.

Rep. Tara Johnson (D–Town of Shelby) is opposed in the 96th Assembly District by Republican Jim Green of Westby.

Congressional races

The Third Congressional District will feature a rematch between U.S. Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R–Prairie du Chien) and Rebecca Cooke of Eau Claire, along with independents Alexander Valiensi Kent and Rustin Provance.

U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan (D–Black Earth) is unopposed on the ballot in the Second Congressional District.

The fall ballot also includes three statewide constitutional amendment referendums:

● Banning government closing of places of worship during emergencies

● Prohibiting government discrimination or preferred treatment based on race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin in public employment, public contracting or public administration.

● Prohibiting a tax or fee increase through a governor’s partial veto.

County races

With Lafayette County Sheriff Reg Gill retiring, Shullsburg police chief Josh Jerry is unopposed on the ballot for sheriff as a Republican. Republican Clerk of Circuit Court Trisha Rowe and Democratic Coroner Linda Gebhardt will also be unopposed on the November ballot.

Green County Sheriff Cody Kanable is running unopposed. Amy Jo Walter (R) faces incumbent Monica Hack for Coroner. Melanie Leutenegger (D) and Jennifer Prien (I) face-off for Clerk of Circuit Court.
