MONROE — June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. On and around this day, communities in the USA and all over the world will sponsor events to highlight solutions to this systemic social challenge.

The Green County Elder Abuse Prevention (EAP) I-Team proudly sponsors a coloring page contest for local fifth, sixth, and/or seventh graders in the county to participate in this national conversation, as well as a T-shirt design contest through the Monroe High School. The Green County I-Team also puts together a banner and pinwheel display outside of the Behring Senior Center from mid-May through June 15, to bring awareness to the community regarding elder abuse. This year, the group is also hosting a booth at the Monroe Farmer’s Market on Saturday, June 12, with activities, prizes, and information.

Green County had 223 total cases of reported elder abuse or neglect in 2020. That is one case reported every 1.6 days, or just over 3% of persons 65+ in Green County, who experienced some form of abuse or neglect in 2020 alone.
