MONROE — The Monroe Arts Center (MAC) hosts two concerts this weekend including The Purdue Varsity Glee Club and pianist John Carson.
MAC’s historic Gunderson Stiles Concert Hall is set for the over 80-member Purdue Varsity Glee Club Saturday, Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m.
Since 1893, the Purdue Varsity Glee Club has stood as a symbol of excellence at Purdue University, and beyond. Performing before presidents and dignitaries, the Glee Club is recognized as one of the best in the United States. Both onstage and off, the group embodies that legacy through its close-knit brotherhood, longstanding traditions and outstanding performances. They’ll perform a mix of classic Glee Club favorites and newer repertoire.
Sam Copeland, a New Glarus native and senior at Purdue, is the Glee Club manager. He’s excited to bring this historic group back to the community that shaped him.
“As an out-of-state student, I never expected to be able to tour back home with my college choir. It is incredibly special to have the opportunity as a senior to return to rural Wisconsin and perform for my community. I’m so excited for the Glee Club to come to Monroe, and I’m even more excited to show my Glee Club friends the place that made me who I am,” he said.
The music doesn’t stop Saturday. Minnesota-native John Carson performs Sunday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m., kicking off MAC’s Sunday Concerts made possible by the Gunderson Stiles Fund for Classical Music. The classical music concerts are free for students and MAC members.
Pianist John Carson attended St. Thomas Choir School in Manhattan, New York from the age of 9 to 14. From 2010 to 2014, he studied privately with Marcantonio Barone in Bryn Mawr and earned a bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota. He received a Masters degree in Chamber Music with Tatevik Mokatsian at the Hochschule für Musik Saar in Saarbrücken, Germany. He is pursuing a DM in collaborative piano at the Jacob’s School of Music studying with Dr. Futaba Niewaka and Kevin Murphy.
Tickets are available for both shows at the MAC box office (1315 11th St., Monroe), or call (608) 325-5700, or purchase online: https://monroeartscenter.com/event.
