MADISON - Shannon O'Brien-Kaszuba, Monroe, will be the featured soloist soprano during three spring concerts of the Philharmonic Chorus of Madison. The choir will perform choral work by Aaron Copland, "In the Beginning."

Under the direction of Dr. Patrick Gorman, the a cappella group will perform "In the Beginning" and other works at free concerts 7 p.m. April 29 at Oakwood West; 7:30 p.m. May 1 at Monona United Methodist Church; and 2 p.m. May 3 at Bethany United Methodist Church.

Considered the Dean of American Music, Copland composed the choral work in 1947, setting 38 verses from the Book of Genesis.

O'Brien-Kaszuba, a longtime chorus member, holds a graduate degree in music from the University of Colorado. She has sung with other groups, including a Heidelberg theater company production of "Les Miserables" during her husband's military service in Germany. She and the chorus performed "In the Beginning" eight years ago.

The concert program developed by Gorman also includes many other selections, such as "When David Heard" by Eric Whitacre, Psalm 117 by Greg Knauf, and "Bogoroditse Devo" by Rachmaninoff.

At the final concert, the chorus will award Madison area high school students scholarships to the University of Wisconsin-Madison summer music clinic.
