Then and now: The first picture is a postcard of the “1st trestle” as it is sometimes called, and the current picture of this trestle, on the Badger State Trail just about a half mile west of the Ethanol plant. Honey Creek runs beneath. The postcard was dated 1909 and the more current picture was taken in October 2018. Rebuilding changes and strengthening for safety were made because the trail was updated for ATVs and bicycles. The railroad came to Monroe in 1858 and the original trestle was constructed then.

The postcard is from the collection of the Green County Historical Society. This, and many more, can be seen at the museum by appointment or on summer weekends June through September. Admission is a free will donation. The membership drive is beginning. To become a member, call 608-558-0175, email lostetter68@gmail.com or direct questions to P.O. Box 804.
