MONROE - Jessica Schieldt, a member of the New Glarus 4-H club and senior at New Glarus High School, has been named the Green County 4-H Crowley Leadership award winner for the 2010-11 4-H year, while Morgan Behnke, member of the New Glarus 4-H Club and a senior at New Glarus High School, was named runner-up.
As county winners, Schieldt and Behnke earn the chance to compete for state-level awards, including a chance to compete for two $500 scholarships that will be awarded for continuing dairy education. The state competition will consist of interviews conducted during the WI State Fair in August.
According to Beth Heinze, University of Wisconsin-Madison/Extension Dairy Youth Specialist, the Crowley Award is one of Wisconsin's more prestigious awards.
"Many past state recipients of this award have gone on to be leaders in the dairy industry," she said. "Last year we had over 35 counties select winners and each and every one of these youth had an impressive track record in the dairy project."
Schieldt, the daughter of Greg and Michelle Schieldt, and a 10-year member of New Glarus 4-H and the dairy project, was selected for her accomplishments in her local school, community and dairy-related activities. She has exhibited Jersey and Milking Shorthorn cattle, is a member of the American Jersey, Milking Shorthorn, Ayrshire and Brown Swiss Associations while managing her dairy animals. She is also involved in many school related activities and is a Green County 4-H Ambassador.
Behnke, daughter of Roger and Lisa Behnke, New Glarus, has also been active in many dairy activities and organizations both locally and statewide. Behnke has shown dairy cattle for the past 10 years and has been active in both 4-H and FFA. She also served as the Green County Dairy Queen in 2009.
The James W. Crowley Dairy Management and Extension Fund sponsors this 4-H dairy award program. Crowley was a longtime UW-Extension dairy specialist and strong supporter of dairy youth project work.
