A barb to the Monroe "fans" who were at the Albany youth girls softball tournament the weekend of July 27. The Monroe "fans" were swearing at a player and continued to do so after the play was over. The third base coach did not say anything to his home "fans" or to the third base player. A good coach would have shown and told the player the appropriate way to make the play and talked to his home "fans." These were 11- and 12-year-old girls and they are still learning the game. Coaches should be there to help all the girls, regardless of what team they play for.
So this barb is for all the Monroe "fans" who think that it is okay to swear and belittle a 12-year-old girl and to the third base coach who stood by and said nothing (real classy, Monroe).
I watched and followed my daughter play four years of varsity softball and I taught her sportsmanship. Dale Buvid would have never allowed this type of behavior on his field. Teaching sportsmanship starts at home with us parents and grandparents and continues onto the coaches (volunteers or paid).
This also pertains to any community "fan" who behaves inappropriately at youth sporting events. Please think before you speak and make the game what it's supposed to be - a fun and learning process for these young children.
