Sen. Jon Erpenbach: Health care's reach expands further in Wisconsin

Statistically, low-income childless adults represent the most chronically uninsured people in Wisconsin. As we work toward the goal of having access to health care for all citizens, the addition of childless adult coverage is essential.

We know with access to affordable health care people can get back to work, take care of themselves and their families better, pay their bills and work themselves out of poverty or dramatic financial situations. With this expansion of the current BadgerCare program, the goal of insuring all of the uninsured individuals can be seen within reach. Qualified individuals are single or married adults who do not qualify for any public or private insurance. Our next step will be to help problem-solve for small businesses, employers and individuals that are underinsured or simply cannot afford the health care they have.

As the author of Healthy Wisconsin, I have spent the past few years advocating for affordable, quality health care delivered through a portable system, without penalties, for all of Wisconsin's people. While we have not yet been able to achieve Healthy Wisconsin in the Legislature, it is designed to work with the BadgerCare Plus system.

BadgerCare Plus has proven to be a highly cost-effective use of Federal and State dollars, keeping lower income children, their families and low-to-moderate income pregnant women covered with health insurance. As we work together to rebuild the economic strength of Wisconsin, we must work with our citizens to keep them healthy and ready for success.

As of June 15, uninsured childless adults will be able to apply for enrollment in the BadgerCare Plus Core Plan. People who apply by this date will be eligible for enrollment in Badger Care Plus no earlier than July 15. With this expansion of BadgerCare, it is estimated that 81,000 uninsured childless adults will have the opportunity to access to affordable health care. To begin the application process, please visit this link www.access.wisconsin.gov. It is important to note that people will not be able to submit applications using this site until June 15th.

In the next few weeks, things could dramatically change nationally on the issue of health care and I am excited to have the opportunity to be a part of that discussion. Moving ahead with programs like BadgerCare Plus and planning for Healthy Wisconsin makes Wisconsin a leader with the ideas and wherewithal that have always made us a state looking ahead.
