Wellington: Children deserve a safe, suitable space for learning
Letter To The Editor

From Christine Wellington

Monroe

To the Editor:

I am writing in support of the school referendum.  This is an important election  for so many reasons. Please take the time to vote on November 8.

As a school board member from 1984 to 2000, I saw many changes in the educational programming in the district. We added many new special education programs, family and consumer education programs, career and technical education programs, and spaces for the performing arts. Each of these areas of growth and change required new and different spaces for learning. Our high school has aged over the ensuing years, and there are educational, structural and health issues at the school that must be addressed.

Each generation must make decisions about what we will leave as our legacy for the future of our community. The children of Monroe deserve to have safe and suitable spaces for learning. After all, these young people will be the future citizens who will be the protectors of our American democracy. They will be the ones to make America a great nation in the eyes of the world. This community has always taken that responsibility of care seriously, providing the best facilities and educational opportunities possible. As a result, the community of Monroe has thrived. Not just Monroe, but every place where our young people have landed is a better place because of the education they carry with them. It all starts right here in our schools. Will we continue to support the young people of our community? Will we do the right thing, as we have in the past? I hope so because the world needs well educated and thoughtful citizens.
