Cairy: Invest in the future of our children and community
Letter To The Editor

By Kim Cairy

Monroe

To the Editor:

I toured Monroe High School on September 21st, 2022. After teaching there for 33 years, it’s been 11 years since I retired. It is amazing at how badly the building has deteriorated.

On a personal basis, my grandson is a sophomore there now. My daughter-in-law teaches there now. My grandson has a class in a science room where the floor has literally detached from the outside wall and is dropping. I am truly concerned for his safety! It worries me! My daughter-in-law’s classroom has had mold issues from water damage. I am concerned for her health and safety as well. The floor in front if the Performing Arts Center has been undermined by water and appears to be sinking. That is only three of many more issues with the current high school.

I feel we should not invest any more money on the current building. The students and staff deserve better. After being in that building for 33 years, I think that when the new additions that were added in the last referendum 20 years ago were not completed properly. The so called “improvements” made the building far worse because it created severe water issues to the foundations and floors. I feel they were design flaws.

If you question building a new High School, I would ask that you visit the school. Listen to the students, teachers and administrators. Ask to take the tour. If you still believe our community children and teachers do not deserve a better, safer learning environment, so be it. I would be disappointed you feel that way. Not angry, but disappointed. I understand it is difficult to increase taxes in our current economic times.

I strongly feel that investing in the future of the children and teachers of our community is an excellent investment. Please vote Yes on the upcoming referendum.
