Recently, 26 Green County residents completed a year-long leadership experience called "Green County Leaders." This outstanding program is made possible by a partnership between the Green County University of Wisconsin-Extension and the Green County Development Corporation. Meeting one Wednesday a month, participants are trained in leadership skills and learn about community issues through meetings with civic leaders, businesses, social service agencies, etc. We enjoyed tours of local businesses, schools, and even a trip to the State Capitol to meet with our legislators. Through all of these unique opportunities, participants gain leadership abilities and insights into the strengths and growing edges of Green County.
This program has been profoundly important to me; I am a relatively new resident to Monroe and so it has given me a much deeper understanding of the culture and many resources of our special county. I have made significant contacts useful in networking to take a more involved role in Green County.
One requirement of the Green County Leaders' program is to complete a group project that enhances life in Green County. In addition to many previous projects such as the drug "drop-off boxes" and the Family Promise of Green County video, this year's class established projects that will bring "work-out stations" to Twining Park, distribute booklets for mental health resources, and enhance the Monroe Farmer's Market on the Square with music and other attractions. You can learn more about all of these fantastic projects as well as more about the Green County Leaders program at www.greencountyleaders.org
Perhaps the most important lesson Green County Leaders learn is that the communities of Green County are ours. They will be what we make them. If you truly care about your community, then it is up to you to have your voice heard, and get involved to work for those changes that will make life in Green County even better. It's really not hard to make a positive impact on our community. Fortunately, we have so many wonderful people and resources available to us here in southern Wisconsin. So, get to know your community; get involved in a local organization, stop by the Green County UW-Extension office, visit a Concert on the Square. Let's all invest in our community in big and small ways so that we will be a fun, healthy, safe, and viable community for generations to come.
