Actually, don’t. I’ll just drink a whole lot of caffeine and not sleep.
Why? Because September is getting crazy all over the place. From the MLB stretch run to the start of the college and NFL seasons, to the continuation of the fall prep sports schedule and the start of school — the only thing I don’t like about September is the leaves falling from the trees.
So here we are, just two weekends shy of Cheese Days, and these are the five things I’m most ready for this upcoming week:
1. Are you ready for some football?
The NFL season kicks off Week 1, and Sunday night we get Aaron Rodgers and the Packers hosting the Chicago Bears and new linebacker Khalil Mack. I am not a fan of either team and I expect Green Bay to mop the recently flooded Lambeau turf with the jerseys off the backs of Chicago. Although all those tears from the Bear Down Nation may re-flood the stadium.
Who am I kidding — this is Lambeau, not Miller Park. Chicago fans don’t just show up and represent 50 percent or more of the butts in the seats.
Also, Mack, who is a fantastic defender, will not do enough to change the fate of the Bears. They need a QB, and another WR, and some offensive linemen, and a couple more defenders, and probably Pittsburgh’s coaching staff in order to get to eight wins this year.
2. Wisconsin vs. New Mexico football, today (Sept. 8).
Hardly a nonconference ringer, but Week 2 for the No. 5-ranked Badgers is perfect to see the offense get into full swing. Without a preseason or even a scrimmage against an opposing team, college programs learn all about what they have the first couple weeks of the season.
While I don’t see this as a trap game for Bucky, I do see it as a game when the O-Line can make some big holes and allow the offense to have a field day — think of the 70-3 Austin Peay game from 2010.
3. MLB stretch run.
Milwaukee is coming off a big series win over Chicago and hosts the Giants this weekend. A three-game set at Chicago to open the week will be pivotal in the NL Central race, but then the Brewers are blessed to return home for six straight against fledging Pittsburgh and last-place Cincinnati.
Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Louis are all within five games in the standings of each other, and the NL Central currently holds a one-game lead for both wild card spots. Basically, the NL champion is going to half to get through the NL Central (or be the NL Central).
4. Pec-Argyle at Black Hawk, yesterday (Sept. 7).
Ok, so this Friday football matchup is over before publication, so I can’t tell you how it ended. But it is a matchup of two of the best small division teams in Wisconsin. Both schools made the top 10 in my AP vote, and the winner will be in prime position to take home the Six Rivers title.
Black Hawk re-loaded after last year’s run to state, with running back Colby Argall able to continuously dash his way past defenders in Weeks 1 and 2. Mitchell Quinn is an all-conference lineman and linebacker that is now a bruising running back. In the biggest rivalry for both teams, this is the time when you want your biggest, baddest hitters putting the other teams on their butts.
Pec-Argyle QB Colton Schraepfer is an incredible athlete and leader, and given some of the weapons around him, it’s no wonder why this Vikings team has the buzz that it does.
5. Fantasy baseball playoffs.
I can see your face right now: “Seriously, more of this fantasy sportsball crap?”
Yes, I am serious. By the slimmest of margins, I backed into the fantasy baseball postseason in my league — and currently hold a lead in this week’s Round 1 matchup. As defending champ, this is huge. I went more than a decade between winning any fantasy league, and there is a chance I could be a back-to-back champ.
Throw in my good feelings from my auction draft in my Fantasy Football League One, and my A- rating draft in my Fantasy Football League Two from early this week and I am ready to dive all-in on Fantasy Sportsballs this fall.
