Appreciate true meaning of Independence Day

In the after glow of some of the beautiful late 4th of July celebrations, I wonder if we really appreciate the significance of the reason for this holiday.

It is just another day off from work? How many men died to make this day a day to celebrate for America?

They died for our freedoms and liberties that we have today, that we take for granted against an overbearing government. We have more freedoms than any other country because of our founding fathers and their wisdom like John Adams who wrote, "It is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand."

The Liberty bell rang after the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 8, 1776. Inscribed on the Liberty bell is a verse from the Bible, Leviticus 25:10. "Proclaim liberty throughout the all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof ..."

Many signers of the Declaration of Independence show what they believed. Benjamin Rush wrote, "My only hope of salvation is in the infinite, transcendent love of God manifested to the world by the death of His Son upon the cross. Nothing but His blood will wash away my sins. I rely exclusively upon it."

Samuel Adams wrote, "I . . . recommend my Soul to that Almighty Being who gave it, and my body I commit to the dust, relying upon the merits of Jesus Christ for a pardon of all my sins."

Roger Sherman wrote, "I believe that there is one only living and true God, existing in three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. . . . that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are a revelation from God. . . . that God did send His own Son to become man, die in the room and stead of sinners, and thus to lay a foundation for the offer of pardon and salvation to all mankind so as all may be saved who are willing to accept the Gospel offer."
