A couple of online readers commented about our story in Saturdays edition on the Monroe football teams victory Friday at Portage.
Congratulations to the Cheesemakers, by the way!
The story of Monroes 28-21 victory over Portage, the Cheesemakers first win since 2006, was the lead story and photo on our Saturday sports page.
The comments were that the story sounded like it was written by a Portage writer it was and that Monroe should have been given more press than the opposition in the story youre right.
Dont be afraid to be a homer! one reader said.
The Times did have a sportswriter from the Portage newspaper who was covering the game send us his story and a photograph. We appreciate that he was able to send us something, because we simply were unable to get a reporter on scene and story filed in time for our deadline.
Mark Nesbitt is our only sportswriter at the moment, and he has been working extremely hard to cover as many games as one person can. Today, for example, hes covering the Monroe soccer game and the Monroe swimming meet. Hell be back in the office tonight to get results from tonights volleyball matches. And we have a news reporter covering a volleyball match.
On Friday night, we sent Mark to the Darlington, Pec-Argyle game, because it was closer and included two circulation-area teams. Brian Gray covered the New Glarus-Monticello game, also because it was nearby.
Our reporters have about an hour to complete their stories and have them edited after they return from a game. So, particularly earlier in the season, we try to keep them as close to our office as possible. As the season progresses, we let the importance of the games dictate where we send reporters.
We did, however, contact the Portage newspaper to see if we could get a little bonus coverage on the Cheesemakers game, because we had a pretty good feeling Monroe could get its first win in a while. Thankfully, we were right!
That said, I, too, would have preferred the story focused more on Monroe. Readers are right to have wanted a little bit more of the home-town coverage.
Unfortunately, Travis Houslet, the Portage reporter, is on his own deadline and didnt have time to write a separate story for us. And I was working the sports desk that night because we were short-handed, and I didnt have the time to do as much rewriting and including of additional information as I would have liked.
But I do appreciate the comments, as they always help shape future coverage decisions.
