My friends, it seems like just yesterday that good friend Scott Stewart and I planned and executed our brilliant 5,500-mile motorcycle journey to Vancouver, Canada, and back. In and of itself, the trip was mind-blowing. In fact, the most depressing single aspect of our 2007 Vancouver trip was, how can we possibly top it?
Well my faithful readers, have no fear after months of brainstorming, Stewbert (as Scott will henceforth be known) and I have finally planned our motorcycle trip for 2008. Our original intent was to purchase off-road bikes and do a beaten track trip through Utah and Arizona. But, the logistics and financial requirements of such a trip hindered us it will have to wait until 2009. Rather, we elected to tour through parts of the country that are easily accessible with the bikes we already own. Our itinerary is as follows:
We will depart Monroe, Wisconsin, on Thursday August 21. We will head southwest to Kansas City, Missouri, to visit relatives. From there, we will follow the Mississippi River all the way to New Orleans. Taking a scenic route, we will meander along the Gulf of Mexico as far as Panama City Beach, Florida, where an exceptional friend of mine is currently stationed with the US Air Force. Then, Stewbert and I will turn northeast, directly up the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, all the way to Lake Eerie. Our trip will finalize after a jog west, along the Great Lakes, bringing us safely back to Monroe.
We will execute this trip on our faithful and bulletproof 2006 Yamaha R1 supersports; the same rides that propelled us to and from Vancouver, Canada, and back just last year. According to Rand McNally, our proposed route entails 3,150 miles. We have reserved 10 days for the trip, and you are welcome to join us as we head south!
