ARGYLE - Wiota rallied from an early deficit to knock off Argyle 7-5 in a Home Talent League game Sunday.
With the win, Wiota (9-4) cut Argyle's lead to one game in the Western Section South Division. With the loss, Argyle drops to 10-3.
Wiota manager Dick Schliem said it was a must-win game. The Indians have swept both games against the Beavers this year. Wiota's Brad Schliem went 3-for-5 with four RBI.
"We certainly couldn't afford another loss," Dick Schliem said.
The Indians rallied in the fourth inning. Jeff Solberg doubled off Argyle starting pitcher Justin Crotty. Brad Schliem delivered an RBI single, and Rooney Janecke, who went 3-for-5, had a key RBI double to tie the game at 2.
Wiota took the lead in the fifth. Kory Tuescher reached on an error and Merrill Brunson walked. Solberg moved them both into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Schliem then came through with a two-run double to give the Indians a 4-2 lead.
Argyle rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the bottom of the eighth. Solberg walked Argyle's Alec Treuthardt and Tyler Ritschard. Drew Schliem reached on an error, Bryan Ritschard delivered an RBI single, and Drew Nafzger had an RBI single to cut the Indians' lead to 5-4.
Both Tyler Ritschard and Nafzger were 2-for-4. The Indians scored two more runs in the ninth to seal the win.
Solberg pitched a complete game for the Indians. He gave up five runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked four. Crotty for Argyle pitched 8 1/3 innings and gave up six runs on nine hits. He struck out four and walked two.
Monroe 4, Platteville 0
PLATTEVILLE - Mitchell Kauk threw seven shutout innings to lift the Monroe Brewers to a 4-0 win over Platteville.
Kauk gave up five hits in addition to striking out four and walking eight.
Matt Busjahn and Dan Purcell were each 2-for-4 for Monroe, which improved to 4-9.
Blanchardville 14, Shulls-Benton 7
BLANCHARDVILLE - Theron Theobald went 3-for-5 and Devin Jeglum was 3-for-6 to lead Blanchardville to a 14-7 win over Shullsburg-Benton.
Blanchardville's Brad Schultz tossed seven innings to get the win. He gave up three runs on 10 hits. With the win, Blanchardville improves to 6-7.
Verona (13-0) leads the Western Section North Division. Verona pounded Dodgeville 12-0 in seven innings. Both Verona's Derek Burgenske and Luke Yapp each hit two-run home runs. Verona beat Argyle in the Western Section championship last year.
