Weather causes problems

DELAVAN - Monroe's tennis team had to fight cold, wet and windy whether at the Delavan-Darien Invitational Saturday.

The Cheesemakers' top singles player, Carson Root, won his first match over Lenny Betker of Union Grove, 7-5, 6-3, but lost to Kenosha St. Joseph's Harry Feverbach, 4-6, 7-5, 10-7. Root was leading Delavan-Darien's Tyler Jones in the third-place match, 4-1, when the rain came and ended the meet.

Freshman Taylor Soddy, playing in the No. 2 singles match, was 2-0 on the day and ahead of St. Joseph's Chris McKeon, 3-2, in the first-place match when the wet whether ended his day.

Eric Knudtson lost his first-round match but won his second outing to put himself into the consolation match. Knudtson led Delavan-Darien's Michael Olson 6-2, 3-2 when the meet ended.

Jess Hager, Monroe's No. 4 singles players, lost both of his matches.

In the doubles tournament, which was held in Elkhorn, Monroe's No. 1 tandem of Patrick Gellings and Garrett Tschanz won both of their matches before getting rained out prior to starting the championship match against Grafton's top pair.

Jakob Baertschi and Cristian Noriega won their first match in the No. 2 doubles bracket before the second match was canceled. The pair had lost the opening set of the canceled match but were leading 3-2 when the rain came.

In the No. 3 doubles division, Monroe's Luke Andraski and Luke Molinaro lost their first match and were trailing their Kettle Moraine opponents headed into the second set.
