MILTON - The Milton Red Hawks scored three goals in a span of two and a half minutes late in the first half to get past the Monroe Cheesemakers, 5-3, in Badger South Conference girls soccer Thursday night.
Trailing 1-0, the Cheesemakers got a tying goal on a free kick by senior Alyssa Studer at 11 minutes, 42 seconds. Sophomore Chelsea Haffele put the Cheesemakers ahead in the 15th minute with a goal on an assist from Studer to make the score 2-1. The Red Hawks countered with a goal in the 31st minute, followed by a goal 35 seconds later and another score 55 seconds after that to take a 4-2 lead before halftime.
In the second half, junior Kylee Ritschard assisted on another goal by Studer at 49:11 to pull Monroe to within 4-3, but the Red Hawks scored at 79:07 to make the final 5-3.
Goalkeeper Gail LaVoie had 20 saves for Monroe.
"There was a couple of minutes of miscommunication and lack of focus, but they came out and surprised a Milton team that is undefeated in the conference," Monroe head coach Miriam O'Neill said. "I have to give a lot of credit to all of the girls. They played a great game. I was really proud of the way they played."
Monroe ( 7-5-1, 2-3-1 Badger South) will travel to McFarland Tuesday.
