SPRING GREEN - Eric Timm has definitely had his moments for the Monroe golf team this season. The challenge for the sophomore has been stringing a series of those big moments together over a full round.

"He's played a lot of good holes, he just hasn't put together a complete (18-hole) round," Cheesemakers coach Brian Jensen said.

Maybe Timm was just waiting for when it really mattered.

The sophomore fired a season-best 74 on Wednesday to take third place in the Badger South Conference tournament at The Springs.

Senior Kyle Bruce carded a 77, helping the Cheesemakers to a third-place finish in the Badger South both in the tournament and the overall standings, which combine regular-season and conference tournament results.

Madison Edgewood won the South title with a 311 while Stoughton was second at 315. Monroe carded a 333 to edge fourth-place Oregon by two strokes.

Waunakee's Zach Gaugert was the overall medalist, firing a 68 to lead the Warriors to a 308 and the Badger North tourney and overall title.

Timm's 2-over-par round included five birdies. His 35 on the front nine was his first under-par round of the season.

"It was a great day for him," Jensen said. "He definitely put it all together and had a great round. I've been expecting it from him."

Unlike Timm, Bruce struggled at the start, taking a 40 on his first nine.

"He had to birdie his ninth hole to shoot his 40," Jensen said. "Then he started off his next nine with a birdie, so the back-to-back birdies got him going a little bit. He shot one over (par) for his second nine, which was a good comeback for him."

Freshman Matt Miller (90), senior Jason Atkinson (92) and junior Caleb Pagel (92) completed Monroe's scoring.

"Jason on his first nine had his best nine in tournament play with a 42 but he let it go on the second nine with a 50," Jensen said. "Shooting a 42 is definitely a positive for him."

Monroe is scheduled to compete in a Division 2 regional tournament on Tuesday at Evansville Golf Club. Play begins at 9 a.m.
