WIOTA - In a big two-game series over the weekend, Wiota earned a split with Argyle by knocking off the Beavers 6-0 in a Home Talent League game Sunday, July 14.

Wiota's Jeff Solberg pitched a complete game three-hit shutout. He struck out four and walked just one.

With the win, Wiota improves to 9-4 and Argyle drops to 10-4. Both Argyle and Wiota are chasing Blanchardville (10-2) for the No. 2 seed in the playoffs.

"We would like to get the No. 2 seed and get a first-round bye," Wiota manager Dick Schliem said. "We had to at least get a split with them. If it comes down to a tie, it comes down to who we beat in our section. It's a complicated formula."

Wiota had four players each finish 2-for-4 at the plate including Merrill Brunson, Brad Schliem, Tommy Meier and Solberg.

Argyle pitcher Jarret Bauman pitched seven innings and gave up five earned runs on nine hits. He struck out two and walked one.

Argyle defeated Wiota 3-0 Saturday, July 13. Argyle's Justin Crotty pitched a complete game three-hit shutout. He struck out 11 and walked two.

"Both pitchers were at their best," Dick Schliem said of the winning pitchers Sunday and Saturday.

Wiota's Justin Doyle also had a strong outing pitching a complete game. He gave up just one earned run on six hits. He struck out nine and walked one.

Argyle Dylan Schwitz went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Wiota's Brad Schliem went 2-for-4.

Monroe 8, Platteville 5

PLATTEVILLE - With several pitchers battling sore arms, the Monroe Brewers went with a pitching by committee approach to knock off Platteville 8-5 Sunday, July 14.

Monroe's Ben Korth started and pitched three shutout innings. Mitch Marty pitched 4 2/3 innings to earn the win. Marty gave up five runs.

"We had to piece together our pitching staff today," Monroe player-manager Jeff Newcomer said. "We had some sore arms."

The Brewers (6-7) have a one-game lead on Ridgeway and Dodgeville for the No. 5 spot in the Western Section. The top six teams will make the playoffs. Monroe's Seth Dascher came through with a clutch two-run double in a five-run seventh to spark the Brewers. Platteville walked two of its six batters in the seventh.

"That started the rally and broke it open for us," Newcomer said.

In another game, Verona defeated Blanchardville 12-1.
