MONROE - The regional tournament for Monroe volleyball coach Danya Ward is a clean slate.
Monroe (9-18) snapped a six-match losing streak by knocking off Evansville in five sets in the regular season finale last week. Monroe received a No. 9 seed and will play at eighth-seeded Clinton in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal match at 7 p.m. today. Ward expects the success to roll into the tournament.
"We are going in with some momentum," Ward said. "Anything can happen. It's definitely a winnable match. If we play like we did against Evansville we can win."
If Monroe wins its first-round match, the Cheesemakers would advance to play No. 1 seed Big Foot in a regional semifinal match. It's a win-or-go-home this time of year.
"Everyone is 0-0 right now," Monticello coach Scott Smice said. "There is no room for error. You have to come out and play every set or you are one and done."
Division 3
Brodhead (26-5) received a No. 2 seed and will host No. 15 seed Montello in the regional quarterfinals tonight at 7 p.m. The biggest stumbling blocks to the Cardinals making a state run could be Waterloo, Cuba City and Wisconsin Heights.
"We are happy with the No. 2 seed and being able to host up to the regional final," Brodhead coach Erin Kammerer said. "It's a big deal for us. It's been a good year for the seniors and I hope they can make a postseason run."
The Cardinals have relied on senior hitters Carly Mohns and Rachel Heller.
"I think both of them are positive role models," Kammerer said. "They proved that hard work really pays off."
Kammerer credited the play of senior Jordan Halvorsen for playing a key role.
Kammerer said the Cardinals will have to serve tough and control the speed of the match.
"If we do that we should win," she said.
New Glarus received a No. 11 seed in the Wisconsin Heights sectional semifinal and will play at No. 6 Riverdale today. If the Knights win, they would play the winner of No. 3 seed Westby and No. 14 seed Darlington.
Division 4
Monticello, the Six Rivers East Conference champion, received a No. 4 seed and will host No. 13 seed Madison Abundant Life tonight. If the Ponies (15-3) win their first-round match, they would host the winner of Fall River and Faith Christian Thursday, Oct. 24.
The Ponies have relied on the hitting of senior Marissa Berg and junior Alyssah Kubly throughout the season.
"It ultimately boils down to if you can pass to your setters," Smice said. "If you can't pass to your setters, it doesn't matter how many good hitters you have on the team. It doesn't matter if we are a No. 4 seed and they are a No. 13 seed. You still have to come ready to play every set."
The Ponies' biggest obstacle to making a sectional title run could be No. 1 seed Randolph, which they could face in the regional championship, and they could face Catholic Central in the sectional semifinal.
"It would be nice to play a regional championship match against someone other than Burlington Catholic Central," Smice said. "I'm excited. We have to win our first two matches first."
Black Hawk received a No. 11 seed and will play at No. 6 seed Johnson Creek. Juda received a No. 7 seed and will host No. 10 seed Cambriea-Friesland. Albany received a No. 15 seed and will play at No. 2 seed Catholic Central. If Juda can get past Cambriea-Friesland, the Panthers would face the winner of Catholic Central and Albany.
Argyle received a No. 7 seed in the Division 4 Luther sectional. Argyle will host No. 10 seed Ithaca today. If the Orioles win, they will play the winner of No. 2 seed Belmont and No. 15 seed Kickapoo Thursday, Oct. 24. Pecatonica received the No. 16 seed in the same sectional and has the unenviable task of playing at No. 1 seed North Crawford.
