BRAMPTON, Canada — The United States lost its first game of the Women’s World Championship to Canada 4-3 in a shoot out on Monday, April 10.
Hannah Bilka scored from the circle on a powerplay goal to give the Americans a 1-0 lead. She was assisted by Abby Roque and Orangeville-native Tessa Janecke. Canada tied the game at one, though, with a goal from Sarah Fillier.
Down 2-1 with just over two minutes to play, the U.S. pulled goalie Aerin Frankel for an extra skater. Laura Stacey then got a pass from Claire Thompson on a breakaway and scored on the empty net.
Undeterred, Hilary Knight and Amanada Kessel scored in the final minute to send the game to overtime. Neither team scored, forcing a shoot out.
There, Canada made two shots to the United States’ one to take the win.
