BRODHEAD - Junior J.J. Panoske has picked his college of choice.
On Sunday, the 6-foot-9, 195 pound center-forward from Brodhead High School announced he will attend Wisconsin-Green Bay, starting in the fall of 2011.
UW-Green Bay was the only school to offer Panoske a scholarship, but there had been talk of an incoming offer from Wisconsin-Milwaukee and other schools, possibly Wisconsin-Madison.
"I wanted to stay in state," Panoske said. "I was really only looking at Green Bay and Madison, but Madison didn't show enough interest in Las Vegas."
Panoske made his decision while traveling home from an AAU tournament in Las Vegas on Sunday. Panoske said he discussed his decision with his father, brother and AAU coach Hugh Roberts of Randolph while they were still on the flight.
"I wanted to get it out of the way. I didn't want to worry about getting injured or anything else. Now I can focus on the season and getting to state," Panoske said.
During his sophomore season at Brodhead last year, Panoske averaged 16.4 points, 8.3 rebounds and 6.2 blocked shots per game and was named first-team all-conference in the Rock Valley-South.
Panoske is not only an inside threat, but also can shoot the deep ball. He has been compared to former Randolph High School star and current UW-Green Bay Phoenix star Ryan Tillema.
"They (UWGB) have a good system. I think I will fit in well," Panoske said.
Panoske only can make a verbal commitment right now. High schoolers cannot sign a letter of intent until the fall of their senior year.
