MADISON - Monroe junior Jordan Montgomery proved to be the class sprinter at the Madison West Class B Relays Saturday.

Montgomery won the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.79 seconds, which was 0.1 seconds ahead of West Bend East's Christian Hernandez, who took second overall Saturday at the Camp Randall Sports Complex. Montgomery's win in the finals came after he ran a 6.75-second finish in the same race in the semifinals.

"There were a lot of Division 1 athletes," Monroe boys track coach Scott Mosher said. "We didn't know how he would stack up with them. We thought he could do well."

Monroe finished ninth out of about 20 teams in the meet with 36 points. Each team was only allowed one runner per event and two entries per field event. However, the Cheesemakers only had two athletes compete in field events, because it was over spring break and Mosher said he didn't want to overwork his athletes.

Badger South Conference rival Monona Grove won the Madison West Class B Relays team title with 96 points. La Crosse Logan finished second (68.5), and Platteville took third (59).

Monroe sophomore Dylan Fahrney finished second in the 800 with a time of 2 minutes, 8.42 seconds.

"He (Fahrney) went out and led the whole way," Mosher said. "It was a good race for him."

Senior teammate Drake Ingold took second in the 3,200 (10:02.52), which was just behind Monona Grove senior Charlie Ellenbecker, who won the race (9:55.11).

The Cheesemakers' 800 relay team of seniors Brayden Zettle, Sam Kind, Jevon Gibson and Montgomery took third with a time of 1:35.53. The Cheesemakers' 800 relay team that set the school record in 2014 (1:30.5) ran a 1:37 in the Madison West Relays that year.

"That is a really quick time for indoors," Mosher said of the 800 relay team Saturday. "I think they can get close to the school record and get to state. We looked back to see where they compared, and it was pretty neat."

Freshman Trevor Rodebaugh took seventh in the 55 hurdles (8.55).

"Most freshmen don't do very good in that event," Mosher said. "For him to take seventh was really good."
