Monroe's U14 brings home title

STOUGHTON - The Monroe U14 Fastpitch Team finished its season with a 2-0 victory over Sun Prairie in the South Central Girls Softball League title game played at Racetrack Park July 27.

The U14 league is made up of 23 teams from as far north as Reedsburg, and is divided into North and South divisions. Monroe finished 10-0 in the South and Sun Prairie finished 11-0 in the North to earn the opportunity to play in the U14 championship game. Monroe reached its 10-0 record after a 4-0 win July 26 against Barneveld, which had also been undefeated in the South Division. Monroe's Chandra McGuire, Taylor O'Leksy and Amanda Putz all had doubles late in the game to help score all four runs. Taylor Barrett made a stab of a line drive in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the shutout.

In the title game against Sun Prairie, Monroe managed only three hits, but they made it count late in the game. Monroe scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning when Putz singled up the middle to score Kari Jordan with the first run of the game. Hanna Buol followed with an RBI ground out to score Katie Holmes for the second run. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Becca Armstrong got to within one pitch of a throwing a perfect game, but she walked a Sun Prairie batter on a 3-2 count with two outs after several foul balls. Armstrong finished the game with no hits, 14 strikeouts and only one walk.
