SAUK CITY - The Monroe baseball team rallied for two wins to sweep a doubleheader against Sauk Prairie Friday.

Monroe came back from a five-run deficit to defeat Sauk Prairie 8-5 in the first game and rallied from a two-run deficit to beat the Eagles 8-6 in the second game of the twinbill.

Monroe senior Sean Saxby went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in the first game. Saxby crushed a three-run home run to right field in a four-run fifth to help the Cheesemakers rally for the win. He hit a solo homer in the fifth to tie the game at 5.

"He gave us life back," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "It was a big boost from him. It was huge."

Monroe (11-9, 3-7 Badger South) capped the comeback with senior Bryan Wang delivering a two-run single in a three-run seventh to win it.

Monroe senior Desmond Ford led off the seventh with a single. Senior Matt Coplien walked and Cam Shaw stole second as a courtesy runner. Wang then came through with a pinch-hit game-winner.

"Bryan hasn't played as much this year, but he has taken it in stride," Huffman said. "He's the life of the dugout. He has been hitting the ball well in practice. He earned an opportunity. I wasn't a bit surprised at all."

Senior Carter Adkins went 2-for-4 with one RBI and junior Garrett Gogin was also 2-for-4 in Game 1.

Monroe sophomore Hogan Edwards earned the win. He pitched two shutout innings. Monroe junior Taylor Meir started on the mound. He gave up five earned runs on five hits. Monroe senior Logan Weckerly pitched a perfect seventh for the save.

In the second game, the Cheesemakers again got a clutch hit from a player off the bench. Senior Jacob Flannery had a key RBI double in a four-run fourth to beat the Eagles.

"They battled," Huffman said. "They didn't stop believing. It's fun to see two guys come off the bench and perform."

Coplien, who went 2-for-2, led off with a double in the fourth. Flannery followed with an RBI double. Adkins then lined an RBI single to score Flannery. Gogin walked and Saxby came through with a sacrifice fly. Ford, who went 2-for-3, had an RBI single to give the Cheesemakers the 8-6 lead. Adkins finished 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Weckerly pitched a complete game to get the win in Game 2. He gave up five earned runs on 10 hits. Weckerly struck out five and walked one.

"He (Weckerly) was very efficient," Huffman said. "He was up in the zone a little bit and they hit him. When he needed to in the fifth inning, he shut them down. He pitched well when it mattered most."

Monroe will play Waunakee in a Badger Challenge game at 11:30 a.m. today in Waunakee.
