MONONA - The Monroe-New Glarus girls swim team set 13 personal-record times en route to finishing fifth in the Badger South Conference swim meet Saturday.

The combination of the Cheesemakers' 6-2 conference dual meet record and their finish at the conference meet gave Monroe-New Glarus third in the final league standings.

"It was quite a day for Monroe-New Glarus girls in the pool," Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser said. "We went in knowing this was going to be a tough meet considering our dual wins against several teams were only by one or two points. We met our goal of finishing fifth and placed third in conference overall. This is the highest place finish we have had in years. I am so proud of all they have done and will continue to do this week as we tackle the next goal."

Monroe-New Glarus senior Maddie Hammer finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.24 seconds. Her sister, freshman Mekenzie Hammer, took second in the 100 backstroke (1:00.19). Mekenzie Hammer also finished third in the 200 individual medley (2:20.27).

All three of the Cheesemakers' relays placed in the top eight. Mekenzie Hammer teamed with Maddie Hammer, Grace Keith and Cammi Ganshert to take fifth in the 200 medley relay with a PR of 1:58.05. The Cheesemakers' 400 freestyle relay team of the two Hammers, Nina Schiro and Francesca Schiro took fifth (3:54.56). Keith teamed with Nina Schiro, Ganshert and Francesca Schiro to take sixth in the 200 freestyle relay with a PR of 1:50.42.

Nina Schiro placed eighth in the 100 backstroke (1:05.43), and Francesca Schiro was eighth in the 200 freestyle (2:07.34).

"This was a total team effort," Moser said. "All of the girls scored in the meet in at least one event. That was our goal."

Monroe-New Glarus will now gear up for the WIAA Division 2 Stoughton sectional Saturday.
