MONROE - The Monroe High School girls soccer team will have a leg up on Capitol Conference co-leader Cambridge-Deerfield when it comes time for seeding the WIAA Division 2 regional after the Cheesemakers clipped the Blue Jays 1-0 on Friday at Honey Creek Park.
Monroe senior Sabrina Jorgenson scored a goal on sophomore Morgan Seffrood's assist that came off sophomore Reily Pond's corner kick at 29 minutes, 52 seconds.
The Cheesemakers (9-4-3, 0-3-2 Badger South) made the one goal stand up on Senior Night.
Monroe freshman goalie Anna Latimer had 10 saves.
"This was a big win for us," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "It (regional seeding) was another important factor. We want to show that we can be competitive against these better teams from other conferences. Cambridge-Deerfield is a good team, and it was a tough match."
Monroe has now beaten the top two teams from the Capitol Conference - Lodi and Cambridge-Deerfield - both by 1-0 scores. The Cheesemakers will play another Capitol Conference team in Sugar River on May 21 at Honey Creek Park.
O'Neill commended Latimer for her defensive work.
"She (Latimer) had some really crucial saves," O'Neill said. "She had a fantastic game."
