MADISON - Monroe senior Blake Bast had a breakout performance in helping the Monroe boys track team take fourth place in the Class B of the Madison West Relays Saturday, April 5 at the University of Wisconsin.

Bast finished second place in the pole vault with a personal record of 12 feet.

"That was the highlight of the meet," Monroe coach Curt Miller said. "It was kind of a breakout meet for us."

The Cheesemakers competed without Ethan Moehn, Jake Hirsbrunner and Noah Tostrud, who went to the WTFA Indoor Championships.

"It gave some other kids a chance to shine," Miller said. "We had an excellent meet."

La Crosse Logan won the Madison West Relays racking up 88.5 points, which was well ahead of second-place Grafton (70). Baraboo (57) finished third ahead of Monroe (46). The Cheesemakers finished just ahead of Badger South rival Monona Grove (41).

Monroe junior Seth Calaway, a state qualifier in the 100-meter dash last year, took second in the 55-meter dash (6.77), which was 0.01 of a second away from champion Nic Fullington of Grafton.

"He (Calaway) is picking right where he left off last year," Miller said.

The Cheesemakers' 400 relay team of Blain Harpstrite, Cody Wolf, Blake Duffy and Calaway finished fourth with a time of 47.38 seconds. The Cheesemakers' 800 relay team of Bast, Forrest Klug-Hanson, Dakota Phillips and Charlie Kind took sixth (1:37.85).

"We sure have a lot of depth in the sprints which is a nice problem to have," Miller said.

Kind finished fourth in the long jump 20 feet, 5 inches) and junior Cody Faust was fourth in the high jump (5-8).

Monroe will open the outdoor track season with a meet at Mount Horeb Tuesday, April 8 that will include Dodgeville-Mineral Point. Mount Horeb finished third place at state last year as a team. Miller isn't looking at this meet as a chance to see how they may stack up later in the year based on who qualifies for state.

"We have two meets circled on our calendar and that is conference and state," he said. "We may only run our top runners in one race. If they beat us 100-0 it doesn't matter."
