MONROE - The Monroe Booster Club is stepping up to help an athletic program in need.

The MHS Booster Club voted 7-0 Thursday, Aug. 22 with one absent on donating the 50-50 raffle proceeds from the season opener Friday, Aug. 23 up to $1,000 to Evansville High School after a fire destroyed their press box and wiped out the middle school and youth football program's equipment.

"We support athletics," said Monroe Booster Club President Frank Pivonka. "We are hoping it spurs more booster clubs to do the same. I saw that story on the news. We just scrimmaged them on Friday night and the next night that happened."

The 50/50 raffle tickets are one for $1, seven for $5, 15 for $10 and 40 for $20. Raffle tickets are sold through the first two quarters of the game and the drawing is set for halftime. The winner will be announced in the fourth quarter.

The fire broke out at the Evansville High School press box at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17. Evansville School District Superintendent Jerry Roth said the press box was a total loss along with all of the youth football and middle school football team's equipment. There was an estimated $250,000 to $300,000 in damages.

Evansville-Albany will still host Union Grove at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23.

The MHS Booster Club is also hosting a tailgate party at 5:30 p.m. before the game. The tailgate party will have brats, hot dogs, chips and lemonade for sale. Anyone who joins the booster club will get a free meal, Pivonka said.

"It all goes to help us make the donation," Pivonka said of the tailgate party.
