MADISON - Nearly 1,000 Special Olympics athletes, including some from the Monroe area, participated in the 2010 Special Olympics Wisconsin State Indoor Sports Tournament in Oshkosh, April 9 to 11.

A total of 58 basketball teams and 64 gymnasts traveled to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh for the competition.

Monroe native Ashley Martin took third place in the basketball skills event and Zachary Reynolds, Monroe, finished fifth in the same contest.

On Friday night, the shrill of the referee's whistle signaled the kick-off to the basketball scrimmage between statewide basketball coaches and the Team Wisconsin Basketball players. After an intense game which gave Team Wisconsin a chance to warm up before their trip to Nebraska this July, the coaches emerged victorious by just one point.

The next morning, gymnasts began twirling ribbons and basketball players started shooting free throws at the Kolf Sports Center. Between competitions, many took a timeout for their health as they visited medical professionals for eye and dental examinations as well as fitness evaluations. Sunday wrapped up with the final rounds of team basketball competition.
