DARLINGTON - Just two days after winning his third straight WIAA Division 3 state championship in cross country, Darlington senior Tyson Miehe announced he would run at the University of Wisconsin next year.

"To represent your home state is an honor," Miehe said. "Wisconsin has one of the greatest programs, traditions and great coaches. I can't wait to get into their program and develop."

Miehe made the announcement at a school assembly Monday that he would attend UW next fall. Miehe became just the fifth Wisconsin prep cross country runner to win three straight boys state titles. Badgers coach Mick Byrne offered him a position in July before the cross country season started.

"We kept it on the down low," Miehe said. "I didn't want it looming over my head during the season. We just wanted to keep it low profile during the season."

Miehe is one of several cross country and track athletes who have made their college announcement. Monroe seniors Ethan Moehn and Jake Hirsbrunner are planning on making some more college visits and will make announcements down the road.

Miehe is the president of Darlington's National Honor Society and Student Council, and he is also a member of the 4-H Club, plays percussion in the school band, concert and pep bands and is also part of the stage crew school's upcoming play, Cinderella. Miehe plans to study kinesiology at Wisconsin.

He has always been driven by his passion for running. A three-time letterwinner in track, Miehe also competes in the 800, 1,600, 3,200, 1,600 relay and 3,200 relays in track. He has won seven state medals, is a seven-time SWAL champion and a seven-time sectional champion.

"I'm definitely excited to get into their program," he said of the Badgers. "You don't have to be the best runner going in there."
