PLATTEVILLE - The Albany boys track team dominated the distance events, but couldn't topple River Ridge, which won the Six Rivers Conference championship Monday at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
Albany track coach Tony Brewer chose to maximize his points and loaded up his top runners in distance events. The Comets swept the top two spots in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. However, a third conference championship in four years wasn't in the cards. River Ridge ran away with the conference team title by outdistancing Albany 189-126.
"There was no way we were going to score that many points," Brewer said. "We felt like we left some points out there early in the meet. They realized they were not going to win the meet and were somewhat satisfied with where they ended up."
Albany freshman Drew Mather won conference championships in the 1,600 (4 minutes, 46.13 seconds) and in the 3,200 (10:44.63). Albany sophomore Reece Whitehead finished second in both the 1,600 (4:47.26) and in the 3,200 (10:48.68).
Albany senior Tyler Conley won the 800 (2:07.21) ahead of Mather (2:07.27).
Pecatonica-Argyle finished third (79,) Black Hawk took fourth (76) and Monticello was eighth (34).
"They are a little disappointed," Black Hawk track coach Cory Milz said of the boys team. "We felt we could have battled with Albany."
Black Hawk senior Cody Foster won the 300 hurdles with a time of 43.83 seconds, which was just ahead of Albany senior T.J. Bump (:44.57). Bump took third in the 110 high hurdles (:17.15). Pecatonica-Argyle junior Lucas Stoehr won the 400 (:51.92) and Monticello's Reid Zanoya was third (:52.75). Stoehr added a third-place finish in the 200 (:24.12).
Pecatonica-Argyle's 800 relay team of Kyle Zwicker, Jess Mabin, Ethan Averill and Marcus Rubio won a conference championship by an eyelash. The Vikings finished in 1:40.72, which was by 0.2 seconds ahead of Belmont.
The Vikings' 3,200 relay team of Chris James, Ian Sigg, Cameron Colson and Wyatt Massey finished first with a time of 8:53.64, which was less than six seconds ahead of Black Hawk. The Warriors' 3,200 relay team of Sev Eisele, Kyle Stauff-acher, Tyler Quinn and Chris Priebe ran a season best time of 8:59.98.
"It's a good way to start," Massey said. "I like running it (the 800) the most because it's a fast race. You have to time it just right. I have been lucky this year with the times."
Pecatonica-Argyle's Jeremy Meudt finished second in his first time high jumping (5 feet, 8 inches).
Albany senior Bryce Hulbert took third in the shot put (42-2) and Monticello's Troy Berg finished second in the discus (119-3) and he was fourth in the shot put (41-7 1/2). Albany junior Josh Krueger took third in the pole vault (9-6).
Black Hawk junior Jake Meier took third in the long jump (19-5) and Zanoya was fourth (19-4 3/4). Black Hawk junior Michael Wolff took third in the triple jump (39-4).
