MONROE - Sophomore Gabby Ludwig scored the game-winning goal to give the Monroe girls soccer team a thrilling 4-3 win over Stoughton on Senior Night Thursday at Honey Creek Park.
Ludwig scored on a pass from senior Chelsea Haffele at 65 minutes, 23 seconds and the Cheesemakers' defense was able to bottle up the Vikings the rest of the way to hang on to the win. Ludwig scored one goal and had two assists to lead the Cheesemakers (5-5, 2-3 Badger South).
"Gabby always plays hard and is really intense," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "She makes things happen on the field."
Monroe freshman Emily Frankowski put the Cheesemakers on the board with a goal on an assist from Ludwig at 4:57.
After the Vikings came back and tied it at 1 entering halftime, the Cheesemakers started the second-half strong. Freshman Kelley Baumann scored on an assist from Ludwig at 52:10 to give the Cheesemakers a 2-1 lead.
"Our seniors were really passionate about winning this game," O'Neill said. "I think they made a decision at halftime that they could come away with this win."
Haffele scored a go-ahead goal at 55:49 to give the Cheesemakers a short-lived 3-2 lead. That set the stage for Ludwig's heroics. Senior goalkeeper Rachel Wellnitz had nine saves.
"The freshmen really stepped up tonight," O'Neill said. "It was nice to see they fought back so hard."
