Locals hit the links in tourneys

MONROE - Several area golfers are competing in Wisconsin State Golf Association tournaments this summer.

Kyle Bruce, a soon-to-be senior at Monroe High School, finished tied for 38th overall at the Wisconsin PGA Junior Championship. Bruce fired a 77 on Tuesday and a 74 on Wednesday at Yahara Hills Golf Course in Madison. Nearly 250 boys participated in the event.

Bruce's round on Tuesday consisted of birdies on the second and fifth hole. Bogeys on seven, eight and nine left him at 1-over-par headed to the back nine. Wayward tee shots on 10 and 14 led to double bogeys, and Bruce was left tied for 57th headed into Day 2.

Wednesday's round saw birdies on the first and third holes, but bogeys on six and eight had him sitting at par (36) through the front nine. Eight pars and a double bogey on the 16th left Bruce at +2 for the tournament.

Gene Kiela III of Plymouth won the tournament with a two-day combined score of 139, or 5-under-par

The WSGA Net Partner's Tournament No. 6 was held on June 28 at Edelweiss Chalet Country Club, and two local partners qualified to move on.

Ronda Buchholz and Brenda Miller combined to shoot a 16-under-par, which led all groups.

Larry Pedracine and Bernie Ellefson combined to shoot an 8-under, which tied for third overall.

Brian and Steve Alt ended in a tie for 12th at 1-under par, and Monroe's Dave Flynn and Mike Freund paired up to notch a 2-over-par and place 17th.

Robby and Rhett Reuter shot a 3-over to finished tied for 18th. Monroe's Jim and Michael Boyce combined to shoot a 29-over-par to place 50th.
