Seffrood, Mau collect 100th career wins

WHITEWATER — In the championship match of the 144-pound bracket at the Mid-States Classic on Dec. 29-30, Darlington-Black Hawk junior Owen Seffrood picked up his 100th career win. Seffrood is currently 18-0 on the season and ranked No.1 in his weight class.

Seffrood was 5-0 on the day with a pin, tech fall, decision and major decision. As a team, Darlington-Black Hawk finished sixth (213 points) of 42 teams. 

Ethan Aird (126) finished second (4-1). He recorded two pins, a tech fall and major decision before falling to Tyler Weidman of Grayslake Central. 

Breylin Goebel (157) also finished second. He tallied three pins — one in 14 seconds — with a major decision before the championship match. There he fell to Brody Sendele of Hononegah 10-6.

Three other WarBirds placed — Eli Aird (120) finished tenth (4-3), Riley Mosley (165) finished seventh (4-2) and Ross Crist (190) finished third (5-1).

Pecatonica-Argyle sent four wrestlers to the Classic, finishing 19th (109 points). Lukas Orloff (120) took second (4-1), earning 38 team points. He tallied three pins and a 6-4 decision on his way to the championship match, where he fell to Alejandro Cordova of Round Lake.

Aidan Gruenenfelder (113) suffered his first loss since the state championship match last season, taking third overall (5-1). In the semifinal, Bruno Cassioppi of Hononegah won 5-2.

Jakob Orloff (132) finished fifth (5-2).

LOURDES ON THE WATER CLASSIC

OSHKOSH — Sugar River’s Mason Mau collected his 100th career win, helping his team to a seventh-place finish (204 points) at the Lourdes on the Water Classic on Dec. 29-30. There were 71 teams at the Classic.

Mau (138) finished fourth (5-2) to earn 33.5 team points. Ranked No. 4 in his weight class, he earned a first-round bye. He worked his way to the semifinal with a pin, tech fall and major decision. There, he fell to No. 2 Bryston Scoles of Kewaskum 7-0. Mau rebounded in the consolation semifinal before falling to Declan Koch of Neenah 8-0.

Blake Endres (120) also finished fourth (5-2). Ranked No. 5, Endres earned a first-round bye. He collected three wins before falling to No. 3 Wyatt Magloski of New London 5-1 in the semifinal. Endres rebounded in the next match before ultimately falling to Maddux Wendling of Valders 3-0.

Four other Raiders made the podium — Carson Loshaw (190) finished fifth (5-2), Trei Udelhoven (175) finished sixth (5-3), Ryker Swenson (165) finished eighth (4-3) and Cayson Helwig (157) finished eighth (5-3).

BI-STATE CLASSIC

LA CROSSE — In the first ever girls Bi-State tournament, Monroe sent two wrestlers. There were 267 participants in 12 brackets. 

Alexia Gallagher (107), who is ranked No. 11 in her weight class, finished eighth (4-3). She recorded two pins, a 5-1 decision and sudden victory. Her three losses came to ranked opponents — No. 10 Joelle Reay from Neenah and No. 15 Kaytlynn Lambries of Holmen.

Althea Eckdhal (120) finished seventh (5-2). She recorded three pins, a decision and major decision.

In the boys tournament, Monroe finished 56 of 72 teams (43 points). Carson Menehan (132) earned 20 team points with his tenth-place finish (5-3). Ranked No. 8 in his weight class, Menehan earned a first-round bye. He also recorded a major decision, decision and pin.
