MCFARLAND — The Sugar River Raiders saw their season end abruptly Oct. 25 in a staggering 8-0 loss to McFarland in a WIAA Division 3 sectional semifinal.

The Spartans would lead 3-0 at halftime thanks to a hat trick by Vince Seils. McFarland wasted no time adding to its lead in the second half with goals in the 52nd and 53rd minutes. The Spartans would score another in the 79th minute, and two more in the 88th and 90th minutes to seal the game.

Sugar River goalkeeper Julian Lutz made six saves and Dylan Posthuma had two saves in net. The Raiders, which finish the season 14-2-1, put just eight shots on goal.

McFarland went on to defeat Madison Edgewood in the sectional championship Oct. 27. Edgewood had knocked off defending state champion Mount Horeb in the sectional semifinal in penalty kicks after playing scoreless through two overtimes.

The Spartans (18-4) play Plymouth (14-4-5) Thursday in the state semifinals at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.
