MONROE — The Monroe girls soccer team is picking up steam after winning its first game on Saturday, April 22, most recently defeating Portage-Poynette 4-1 on Friday, April 28. Lone senior Atziry Ocampo scored all four goals.
“The team is progressing quickly, especially since we don’t have a JV team this year,” Ocampo said. “There are students who have never played before, or have little to no experience. The fact that they are progressing so quickly to give me these opportunities is insane, and I’m proud of all of them.”
Ocampo scored her first goal on a breakaway ten minutes into the contest.
The Cheesemakers then entered a lull, unable to score again in the first half. Portage-Poynette came out of halftime with the momentum, nearly scoring on a cross pass but were called offsides. Later, the Warriors tied the game on a 25-yard shot from Ellen Lofsjogard.
Ocampo countered with two goals in a span of one minute to take the 3-1 lead — a hat trick. The first was within the box, and the second was off a free kick from Marlies Brandli. Ten minutes later, Violet Lewis assisted Ocampo for her fourth goal.
Brandli had a shot at her own goal on a free kick, but her 45-yard strike hit the crossbar.
Ocampo ended the game with four goals and — paired with her goal in the 3-1 loss to Fort Atkinson on Thursday, April 27 — tallied five goals on the week.
“Atziry showed tonight why she is such a phenomenal player and a captain on this team,” Monroe head coach Hannah Ormson said. “She works so hard every day in practice. She not only leads the team in goals but leads the team in the community and school. She is a fantastic young lady all around, and we can’t wait to see what she does in college.”
