No. 2 Brodhead sweeps Big Foot
Juda-Albany jumps four spots in rankings

BRODHEAD — Brodhead, ranked No. 2 in Division 3, improved to 16-1 with a doubleheader sweep of Big Foot on Tuesday, May 2.

The Cardinals shut out the Chiefs in game one 14-0 — Brodhead’s tenth shutout of the season. After scoring just three runs in the first two innings, the Cardinals broke the game open with a 10-run third. 

Taetum Hoesly led off the inning with a solo shot over the left field fence. With bases loaded, Alecia Dahl hit a bloop single over the second baseman’s head for an RBI. The next four at-bats produced runs, as Hoesly singled in her second at-bat of the inning. Back-to-back singles from Alexis Kammerer and Jaelynn Hilliard scored another run. Kammerer scored on an error, and Hilliard reached home before Jerrica Schwartz was tagged out on a fielder’s choice.

Sophia Leitzen and Hoesly went a combined 6-for-7 with six RBIs and three extra-base hits. Mckenna Young picked up the win, allowing just one hit. She struck out 11 without issuing a walk.

Brodhead completed the sweep with an 11-1 win in game two. The Cardinals jumped out of the gate with a four-run first, aided by three Chief errors.

Schwartz went 2-for-2 at plate, while Ava Risum collected the win. She allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out 14.


MNG earns split

MONTICELLO — The Ponies battled through 20 mph winds and chills temps to earn the split on Tuesday, May 2.

Monticello-New Glarus fell to conference opponent Pecatonica 6-2 in game one. The Ponies took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but the Vikings scored six unanswered runs to seal the victory.

Center fielder Maddie Hirsch led Pecatonica at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a triple Chloe Schraepfer, who also hit a triple, earned the win in the circle. She pitched all eight innings, giving up one earned run on six hits. She struck out eight and walked one.

Jaden Zuber paced the Ponies, going 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and a double. Tatum O’Bel suffered the loss. She gave up five earned runs on eight hits. She struck out eight and walked three. 

Monticello-New Glarus rebounded in game two to defeat Belleville 4-1. The Ponies took the lead in the bottom of the first, as Dalana Trumpy stole home on the throw back to the pitcher. 

Karlee Wilkins accounted for half of the Ponies’ hits, one of which was a triple. Molly Olson collected the win, retiring 14 straight batters from the second to sixth innings. She scattered four hits for one earned run and struck out three batters. 


Argyle shut out twice

ARGYLE — The Orioles dropped to 3-12 with a pair of ranked losses on Monday, May 1 and Tuesday, May 2.

Argyle faced No. 7 Barneveld on Monday and fell by a score of 11-0. The Eagles scored eight runs in the last two innings to secure the win. Sam Kammes recorded two of Argyle’s three hits. Mya McNett pitched all five innings and suffered the loss. She struck out four but walked five.

No. 5 Juda-Albany scored 13 runs in the first inning to defeat Argyle 16-0 on Tuesday. After throwing a perfect game against the Orioles on Saturday, April 29, the Panthers were just three outs away from the same feat. Argyle tallied two hits and Juda-Albany committed one error.

Ava Wiegel and Bridget Vance tallied the Orioles’ only hits, while McNett suffered the loss. She pitched just two innings and gave up 16 earned runs on 13 hits. 

Avary and Emerson Briggs went a combined 6-for-6 with four RBIs. Jackie Nusbaum and Ciarrah Davis were also perfect at the plate, tallying two hits each. Nusbaum drove in a team-best five runs. Emerson Briggs collected the win. She gave up just two hits while striking out eight batters.
