No. 1 Monroe runs amok at East Troy; BHW rolls BSMS
Cheesemakers force 6 turnovers in 54-6 blowout; lead state in rushing by nearly 500 yards with one week left

EAST TROY — The Monroe Cheesemakers (8-0, 6-0 Rock Valley) continued its offensive onslaught in East Troy (2-6, 1-5) with a 54-8 win on Friday, Oct. 7. This season, the Cheesemakers have outscored their opponents 291-42.

Monroe used its trio of running backs — Keatin Sweeney, Alex Hernandez and Kaden Kuester — to score 30 of its points. 

Kuester opened the game with a 19-yard run and followed it up with another 19-yard run with a second left in the first quarter. Hernandez scampered for two short touchdown runs, while Sweeney closed out the first half with a 13-yard run.

Tucker Markham, who has 287 rushing yards on the season, scored Monroe’s sixth touchdown of the night on a seven-yard run. The only passing touchdown of the half, and the game, was George Brukwicki’s pass to Drew Indergand.

Up 47-0, Monroe relied on their backups for the second half. Joseph Rufenacht scored the final touchdown for the Cheesemakers on a seven-yard run. 

East Troy managed one touchdown, thanks to a six-yard run from Ryan Weed. 

Brukwicki was 3-for-3 passing for a total of 96 yards. He targeted Keegan Dahmen, Indergand and Hernandez once each. Of Monroe’s seven rushers, Hernandez led them all with 120 yards on 11 carries. Sweeney, who totaled 74 yards, averaged 12.3 yards per carry. 

With the win, Monroe earns at least a share of the conference title. The Cheesemakers can claim it outright with a win over Whitewater (0-8, 0-6) on Friday, Oct. 14.


BLACK HAWK 52, BENTON/SCALES MOUND/SHULLSBURG 8

SHULLSBURG — Entering their Week 8 match up with Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg (5-3, 4-2 Six Rivers), the Black Hawk Warriors (5-3, 3-3) were needing a victory to keep their playoff hopes alive, thanks in part to a two-game skid of embarrassing losses. Mission accomplished after winning 52-8.

“I don’t think there was anybody outside our locker room giving us a shot of winning this game, but we were confident in our ability and that’s all that really matters,” Black Hawk head coach Desmond Breadon said.

The Warriors capitalized on a turnover for their first score of the night. Lucas Milz ran 14 yards for a touchdown, and Landen Mahoney converted the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Mahoney ran for a five-yard and 43-yard touchdown. After the first half, Black Hawk led 22-0.

Reed McNutt got in on the scoring with a rushing touchdown to open the second half. Four minutes later, Milz ran for his second touchdown of the night to put the Warriors up 38-0.

Once again, McNutt opened the quarter with a touchdown, this time on a 78-yard run. 

Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg avoided a shutout with its 55-yard rushing touchdown by Colin Montanye. 

To put the icing on the cake, Owen Seffrood escaped for a 44-yard touchdown. Quincy Adams found the end zone on the two-point conversion for the final score of 52-8. 

The Warriors put up 482 yards of total offense, led by McNutt and Mahoney, who had 177 and 148 total yards, respectively. 

Black Hawk finishes their regular season with a game against Pecatonica/Argyle (0-8, 0-6) on Friday, Oct. 14. 


PRAIRIE DU CHIEN 30, BRODHEAD/JUDA 21

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN — Brodhead/Juda (6-2, 4-2 SWC) lost a crucial game against conference-leading Prairie du Chien (6-2, 6-0) on Friday, Oct. 7. 

After an even 14-14 first quarter, Prairie du Chien outscored Brodhead/Juda 16-7 in the remainder of the game.

Blackhawks quarterback Maddox Cejka was 8-for-16 for 165 yards, with each of his passes going to Blake Thiry. Rhett Koenig led all rushers with 84 yards on 14 carries.

Brodhead/Juda will battle Lancaster (6-2, 4-2) on Friday, Oct. 7 for second place in the conference. 


LODI 42, NEW GLARUS-MONTICELLO 7

LODI — After its first win of the season, NGM (1-7, 1-5 Capitol) fell to Lodi (7-1, 5-1) in a conference battle on Friday, Oct. 7.

The Blue Devils scored all 42 of their points before the Glarner Knights scored in the fourth quarter. Five of Lodi’s six touchdowns were on the ground, with the lone scoring pass going to Brian Meitzner. In six extra-point attempts, Meitzner converted on all of them.

Max Marty connected with AC Strok for NGM’s lone touchdown, and Lawrence Vasquez converted the extra-point kick.

The Glarner Knights close out the regular season by hosting the conference-leading Columbus Cardinals (8-0, 6-0) on Friday, Oct. 14.


SOUTHWESTERN/EAST DUBUQUE 50, PECATONICA/ARGYLE 7

HAZEL GREEN — Pecatonica/Argyle football co-op (0-8, 0-6 Six Rivers) dropped a game to Southwestern/East Dubuque, IL (4-4, 2-4) on Friday, Oct. 7.

The Vikings will seek their first win of the season and conference on Friday, Oct. 14, as they host Black Hawk (5-3, 3-3). 


MINERAL POINT 55, PARKVIEW/ALBANY 0

ORFORDVILLE — Parkview/Albany (0-8, 0-6 SWAL) was unable to score in its game against Mineral Point (3-5, 3-3) on Friday, Oct. 7. 

The Miners got on the board with a fumble recovered for a touchdown by Brenden Lynch. Later in the first quarter, Lynch ran for two more touchdowns. Eli Lindsay also ran for a 38-yard touchdown in the first.

In the second quarter, Lindsay did his scoring in the air with touchdown passes to Reid Acherman and Tarrin Riley. 

Up by 49 points, second-string quarterback Jaxson Wendhausen connected with Maddix Jackson for another touchdown. 

The Miners complied 393 totals yards of offense compared to the Vikings’ 61. Of the nine Mineral Point rushers to carry the ball, Lynch led them with 53 yards on eight carries. In the air, Luke Filardo had 56 yards on four completions.

The Vikings’ Greyson Cramer and Mathias Treinen went a combined 3-for-9 for 25 passing yards. Karson Redman ran for 38 yards on 13 carries and gained 25 yards on three completed passes. 

Parkview/Albany concludes the regular season at Belleville (7-1, 5-1) on Friday, Oct. 14.
