Monroe wins boys, girls meets at MH

MOUNT HOREB — Both Monroe’s boys and girls track teams finished in first place at the Mount Horeb Quad April 5. The Cheesemakers’ girls team finished with 111 points, well ahead of Stoughton, while the boys team scored 82.5, which topped Mount Horeb.

“For the girls, it was nice to get a win against such great competition and successful programs, scoring a lot of points in the field events and sprints,” Monroe coach Eric Jubeck said. “We scored points in 17 out of 18 events and had multiple athletes score points in eight events. I couldn’t have been more happy with the effort by the entire team and it was great to see the competitive fire and drive to win.  We really set the tone for what we hope to accomplish this season.”

Cammi Ganshert won the 100- and 200-meter dash races. Ganshert finished the 100 with a time of 13.1 seconds, while teammate Faith Koester tied Stoughton’s Matayla DeBruin for second (13.7). In the 200, Gansher’s time of 26.9 led the field.

Monroe’s Jaclyn Hayes was third in the 1,600-meter run (6:18.7). The Cheesemakers had the only two entries in the 3,200, with Elsa Schaefer (14:46.3) claiming first place over teammate Kaitlyn Elgin (14:55.3).

Cassi Gersbach won the 100 hurdles (16.7) and teammate Bri Seagreaves (17.9) was second. Sierra McGuire finished tied for third in the 300 hurdles (58.0). 

In the 400-relay, Monroe (55.8) edged Mount Horeb by 1/10th of a second. The Cheesemakers also won the 800 relay (1:52.1) and finished second in the 1,600-relay (4:40.5) and third in the 3,200-relay (11:14.9).

In the field events, Megan Benzschawel won the high jump with a mark of 4-feet, 10-inches. Seagreaves was first in the long jump (15-03.5) and triple jump (30-09), while teammate Makayla Harrow was third in the triple jump (26-06.5).

Chloe Brunker won the shot put (36-06) over teammate Riley Hartwig (34-04). Brunker (108-01), Hartwig (86-09) and Grace Saunders (85-07.5) finished 1-2-3- in the discus.

On the boys side, Monroe’s Jordan Montgomery won the 100 (11.0), with teammate Lucas Flom taking third (11.6). Nick Bansley won the 200 (24.0).

In the 400, Shawn Sweeney was third for Monroe (56.3). Kyle Legler won the 1,600 (4:46.6), with Dylan Fahrney (4:51.9) finishing just 1/10th of a second out of second place. Fahnrey also got third in the 3,200 (11:13.9), missing out on second by 3/10ths of a second.

Trevor Rodebaugh was second in the 110-high hurdles (15.9), losing to Dodgeville-Mineral Point’s Jason Gleichauf by 1/10th of a second. Rodebaugh then won by 0.1 in the 300-hurdles (43.9). 

Monroe’s 800-relay team finished first (1:26.1), while the 1,600-relay team was third (3:48.8) and the 3,200-relay team was second (9:24.2).

In the field events, Monroe’s Cade Meyer tied with Mount Horeb’s Caden Thomas in the high jump with a mark of 6-2. Patrick Rielly was second in the pole vault (10-0), while Montgomery won the long jump (19-0) by a half of an inch. Caleb Brunker took second in the shot put (36-08) by an inch.


Wisconsin Heights Invitational

MAZOMANIE — Monticello and Black Hawk both participated in the Eklund-Erickson Wisconsin Heights Invite April 4. Monticello’s girls team was seventh and the boys team was sixth. Black Hawk finished ninth for both.

Cuba City won the girls meet, while River Valley won the boys.

Black Hawk’s Jaylen Rufenacht was second in the 100 (12.02), and Monticello’s Cade Femrite won the 400 (57.67). Rufenacht was second in the high jump (5-08), just ahead of Monticello’s Pete Gustafson (5-06).

In the 800, Monticello’s Rudy Wicker was second (2:14.79), while teammate Evan Guenther was third in the 3,200 (11:04.84). The Ponies’ 3,200-relay team took third (9:47.0).

On the girls side, Alyssen Noriega was second in the 100 (13.23) and first in the 200 (26.92). Monticello teammate Ali Risley was third in the 400 (1:08.02).

In the 300-hurdles, Monticello’s Maggie Bak was second (52.15) while Black Hawk’s Emily Triem (52.39) was third. Bak won the long jump (14-10.5).
